It was eventually discovered that the cause of the civil strife was a psychotropic agent in the city's water supply which increased people's aggression and tribal instincts simultaneously. Anyone from a different block was fair game. For no discernible reason the citizens were up in arms, and heavy artillery intended for repelling external foes was instead deployed against former neighbours. A wave of internecine fighting surged through the streets, pitting city block against city block and even sucking Judges into the swirling maelstrom of violence. The first salvo in the war, although only recognisable as such with hindsight, was the phenomenon nicknamed 'Block Mania' in the year 2103 AD (progs 236 to 244). Never before or since have so many lives been lost to a single enemy, and so many Mega-City citizens contributed to their own destruction. For those who do remember, the war occupies a unique place in the history of Mega-City crises. Half the population - 400 million people - died in the bloody conflict, which left 65% of Mega-City One in ruins, and the city has not been unscathed since then. There are few citizens alive today who remember the Apocalypse War ( 2000 AD progs 245 to 270).
